Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the NIU Alert System?

The NIU Alert System is a service that allows the university to send a text message to the cell phones of registered users in the event of an emergency.

  2. How do I sign up for the NIU Alert System?

Visit the NIU Alert Registration page. Your registration information is private and will not be shared. You will provide your name, cell phone number, service provider and e-mail address. You will also need to create a password. Once you submit your registration information, a test message will be sent to your phone and your e-mail address.

  3. What kind of information can I expect to receive from the NIU Alert system?

The NIU Alert text messaging system will only be used to notify you about an imminent and verifiable danger or threat affecting the general campus population.

  4. Does it cost anything to use the NIU Alert system?

There is no charge to sign up for this service. Your cell phone carrier might charge you to receive text messages, so please check your plan. If your plan includes unlimited text messages, you will not be charged.

  5. I didn't receive a test message on my phone when I registered. What does that mean?

Once you register, a test message will be sent to your cell phone which will include the name of your cell phone service provider. If you do not receive a test text message on your cell phone, please contact your service provider to verify that text messaging is a part of your service plan. If you need further assistance, call the NIU ITS Helpdesk at (815) 753-8100.

  6. What do I do when I receive an emergency notification message?

NIU Alert messages will give you a brief description of the situation and tell you what you should do. If you received an NIU Alert, you should immediately share the information with those around you.

  7. Is the NIU Alert system reliable?

The NIU Alert system is an extremely reliable emergency text messaging notification system. However, the university cannot ensure that every message sent will be received. Factors that can affect the quality of service and deliverability include Internet capability, signal strength, structures, topography, geography and provider network integrity.

The NIU Alert system is just one component of the university's comprehensive emergency notification system which employs a variety of communication mechanisms to reach as many people in the campus community as possible in the event of an emergency.

  8. I don't use text messaging. Is this the only way the university will deliver emergency messages?

No. The NIU Alert system is just one of many ways that the university notifies the campus of emergencies.

  9. My cell phone number has changed and I'm no longer receiving alerts. What do I do?

You can update your cell phone number by logging into the "Edit Info" page with your cell phone number and password and providing your new number.

  10. Can I unsubscribe from the NIU Alert system?

You may unsubscribe from this service at any time. Go to the "Remove Info" page and enter your cell phone number and password.
