- NIU Football opens its 2008 season at the University of Minnesota
- Women's Basketball Coach Carol Owens was named to the Board of Directors of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association
- Northern Illinois guard Darion "Jake" Anderson was named the 2008 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, becoming the first Huskie to win that award since Kenny Battle earned that honor in 1985. He was also the first NIU freshman to lead the squad in scoring (12.2 ppg.) since T.J. Lux (15.2 ppg.) in 1995-96.
- Eleven of NIU's 17 teams reported a semester grade point average of 3.0 or above for the sixth straight semester.
- Adam Holdenrid earned a prestigious Rawlings Gold Glove Award from the American Baseball Coaches Assocation

- NIU’s new athletic facility, the Jeffrey & Kimberly Yordon Center, enhances the on-field and classroom performance of student-athletes. The 60,000-square-foot facility includes a strength and conditioning center, academic performance center with fully equipped technology lab, football locker room, and sports medicine areas.
